old fethiye harbour shipsIf you believe a picture is worth a thousand words, then this is very much the section for you. A pictorial walk through a couple of thousand years, showing how Fethiye was, how it developed, where it developed and where it is now. A very interesting journey from start to finish.

One of the earliest images of Fethiye, possibly 18th Century. In the cliff sides the Lycian Rock Tombs can clearly be seen, although very little development of the town. In the foreground, the stone sarcophagus (a stone tomb or coffin) can be seen. There are three parts - the base, the burial chamber (grave chamber) and a usually more ornate top section, often gothic in style. Some say this section takes the form of an upturned boat to honour those lost at sea.

Interestingly, the sarcophagus painted above is still in place, although due to various forms of expansion of Fethiye is actually now ever so slightly inland! You can see it next to the Town Hall in Fethiye:
