It's worth knowing that the historic Greek Island of Rhodes is within easy traveling distance of Fethiye. In fact, after Dalaman it is technically the next closest international airport! Day trips to from Fethiye harbour to Rhodes follow a relaxed timetable, not too early a start or late return.
It's definitely worth considering a day trip to Rhodes - simple to book, at most tour and excursion shops in Fethiye and the other local resorts - the price also includes collecting you from your hotel and returning you back after, so you don't even need to find your way to the harbour. Crossing time is around an hour and a half in the catamaran (the new, modern "Aegean Queen" as pictured is slowly replacing the old "Flying Poseidon" catamaran but either can be your vehicle at present) and crossing times can vary depending on sea conditions.
Rhodes is a wonderful destination and so much to see - the ancient harbour defences, the famous walled old town and some wonderful local food - similar in some ways to Turkish cuisine but some delicious alternatives too - not least the popularity of pork dishes! Be careful in Rhodes when deciding where to eat and where to buy souveniers (or anything else come to that) - enjoy the amazing old town but step outside to see quality rise and prices half. There are some superb cafe style restaurants lining the seafront that are way cheaper than those inside the walls of the old city. You will also find some home favourites - Marks & Spencer, BHS alongside chic local boutiques and countless shops selling countless...umbrellas?! Taxis are plentiful, cheap and very good quality cars. Taxi fees are set (around €5 for journeys in and around Rhodes Town) so while the walled city and the main shopping areas are well within easy walking distance of the ferry port, it may be worth taking one from the taxi rank immediately outside the ferry terminal into town if you want to do some shopping - unlike Turkey, Rhodes observes a siesta timetable, so afternoons see nearly all the shops close for a couple of hours.
A good plan is taxi from ferry terminal to shopping centre (just ask for Marks & Spencer, every driver knows that!) - shopping - lunch - short walk to Old Town - short walk to ferry terminal. Another suggestion (especially for those not interested in lookin ground the shops is to replace that part of the day's itinerary with a relaxing morning or afternoon by the sea - Rhodes Town has some lovely beaches and if you walk away from the ferry (sea to your right), to find them.
Be careful to watch your time, you will need to be back at the terminal and ready to board at the time given when you arrived. Beware, this day can pass more quickly than you think! Also you get another chance to buy duty free at the Rhodes ferry terminal on the way home - well worth remembering, given the high taxes on imported spirits back in Turkey.
Rhodes doesn't have to be a day trip from Fethiye either - you can book return tickets for a couple of days or more to allow you time to explore the island. Hotels can be booked for just a day or two - compare rates and book hotels for Rhodes Town (external link)
