Fethiye Places to Visit: Butterfly Valley near Ölü Deniz |
|
Butterfly Valley (in Turkish Kelebekler Vadisi) is just a short distance along the coastline from Ölü Deniz - but a million miles away in terms of experience. While Ölü Deniz is a place with a great buzz and vast choices of places to eat, Butterfly Valley is an exquisitely basic affair. Stunning white beach and blue waters in uncomplicated surroundings.
The valley is indeed a place where large numbers of butterflies thrive, and there is very little here other than them, a couple of buildings and a camping area. If you go off exploring you can find a waterfall - but it isn't a place for exploring particularly, it is a place simply to discover and experience - almost like stepping back in time.
To get to Butterfly Valley you can take a boat (daily from Ölü Deniz Beach) or it lies beneath the Faralya area - you can descend it's almost vertical sides if you possess sufficient skill or stupidity! So probably boat then. A good proportion of people who visit Butterfly Valley stay over for the night or more. You will often see people on the boat with tents as this is the main accommodation type in the Valley - but tents can be hired if you decide to stay and didn't bring one. There are also alternative accommodations - dormatories and even bungalows. Food is also provided in the style of breakfast and dinner open buffets.
The valley is run as a business and if you are staying you need to check in and confirm your stay and accommodation requirements. This is all very easy, and like Butterfly Valley itself is a most laid back affair. Full details on accommodation, the boat service and the valley itself can be found on the very informative official website - http://www.kelebeklervadisi.org/?lang=en
Butterfly Valley is a very friendly and casual place - often due to people meeting "like minded" folk there and enjoying the simple things and tranquility - a peacefulness only broken once a day - at around lunchtime, when the beach becomes a top destination for the Olu Deniz boat trips to anchor up!
