Sunken Ship to Become Fethiye Dive Reef

aegean independent newspaperThe diving industry is one of Fethiye's most successful tourism sectors, the crystal clear waters of Fethiye bay attracting thousands of divers to the area and employing many people locally. One long standing hope of some in the industry, to sink a redundant ship in the area to begin the process of creating an artificial reef is to be realised, reports the Aegean Independent Newspaper.

At a cost of around 110,000 Turkish Lira - around £40,000 - the local Fethiye Underseas Agency will bring the vessel (currently a long way away in Samsun on the Black Sea Coast) to Fethiye. The cost will be funded by the diving community and funds promised sunken ship reef in fethiye bay by the Governor of Fethiye. He sees the great potential for extra tourism in Fethiye the project can generate.

Creating artificial reefs using sea vessels is something that has been done many times around the World, notably around Florida in the USA, but this project would be the very first not just for the Fethiye area but for Turkey as a whole.
