Fethiye Restaurants: Dining Gems - Ocakbasi |
|
Ocakbaşı restaurant has an enviable position on the main Fethiye seafront road, looking directly across the promenade and out to the bay. This is quite possibly the rewards for their hard work and consistent quality of food and service when they were located in a much smaller restaurant in one of the side streets in the same area.
Ocakbasi means something like "fireside" and that is a big clue as to the nature of this traditional Turkish restaurant. Everything centres around a large, inside barbecue - in fact, you can sit in the seats that are literally around the barbecue - these places in particular are snapped up in the Winter - and avoided in the Summer! The barbecue is quite long and that is part of the cooking process. The chef (and in the case of Ocakbasi, owner - Coskun Usta) lights the coals at one end of the barbecue tray and when the coals are suitably grey, service commences. As the evening moves on the optimum area for cooking moves on too - so the chef moves along with the coals as the grey area progresses from one end towards the other. When the charcoal trail has reached the end, it's pretty much closing time! The list of choices is surprising and delicious - from beautifully tender lamb kebaps, liver kebaps, spicier Adana Kebaps, chicken kebaps, kebaps with pistachio nuts, you get the idea here. If you can't decide, simply ask for a selection or choose the mixed kebap from the menu. Things are relatively cheap too so take a chance to experiment.
Ocakbasi Coskun Usta is very easy to find. From Fethiye harbour you need to head along the promenade in the Calis direction - it is walkable and the walk is enjoyable and will also give you a little boost to your appetite.
